I don’t know his name, but his messy, shoulder-length hair hides a pair of hauntingly blue eyes. It’s a warm September day in New York, but he’s sitting under a mountain of ragged bits of clothing, towels and blankets. We often confuse being productive with working as fast as we can every second of the day. We fear that slowing down and organizing will kill our productivity, but the facts suggest otherwise: The average office employee spends “at least two hours a day—or 25% of their workweek—looking for the documents, information or people they need to do their jobs,” according to Glean ’s 2022 Hybrid Workplace Habits & Hangups survey. “54% of U.S. office professionals surveyed agreed that they spend more
Valentine’s Day is a special day dedicated to celebrating love and affection between intimate partners. While we often show our love and appreciation for others through gifts and special gestures, it’s equally important to show love to ourselves and the most precious resource we have: time. That’s why I propose a new holiday: “ValenTime’s Day” The concept of ValenTime’s Day is simple: to make time a priority in our lives and celebrate the love and apprec
A survey from CBRE claims that the imposition of more hybrid and flexible working has been an ‘unexpected gift’ for both employers and employees. The poll of 20,000 employees worldwide suggests that flexibility plays an important role for both employee and employer decision making. We’ve all heard the narrative about senior women who don’t support the women below them. (Of course, what we hear less about are the battles those senior women fought and the toll they have taken.) We know about the “mansplainers,” the low-key harassers and the “underminers” young women face at work. Some women might object to the premise of this article.

Boosting employee engagement within your organization is easier said than done, but any step in the right direction is sure to have a positive impact. The question you need to address is how to best improve employee engagement. Once you have a strategy, you can then carry it out with.
Quiet quitting was trending in 2022, as employees responded to feeling underappreciated , underutilized and under-compensated. So, they stopped trying, doing the bare minimum necessary to stay employed and fly under the radar. Business leaders now have a response, one called “quiet hiring.” This new workplace phenomenon is the result of bosses trying to figure out creative ways to fill gaps in their companies without spending extra money to hire new employees.
This post, the $15,000 coffee fund, the cheapskate executives, and other stories of office coffee wars , was written by Alison Green and published on Ask a Manager. Last week, I asked for your stories about office coffee wars (or tea/milk/etc. wars). Here are 15 of my favorites … plus an update. 1. If you’ve been following me for any period of time, you probably know that I consider myself a productivity enthusiast. But in the recent past, I’ve started to feel that many traditional concepts of “time management” are just incomplete. The modern trend to focus on tips, tricks, and hacks has removed the nuance from the conversation and forced us to blindly adopt a “faster is better” mentality.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson was in the seventh year of his Hall of Fame career when thoughts of his basketball afterlife led him to the office of uber-executive Michael Ovitz, co-founder of Creative Artists Agency. Responding to what it claims are challenges emerging from the pandemic and the accelerating need for the built environment to respond to climate change, the British Council for Offices (BCO) has released an early update to its Guide to Specification, which provides expert advice on how designers can create healthier offices that support changing working patterns, while reducing carbon emissions.
Nothing beats curling up and pressing play on your favorite spooky TV series (if you’re able to keep your eyes open, that is). But here’s a spoiler for you: mythical monsters really do exist. Arthur C Clarke’s finest novel Childhood’s End is the story of an Earth that is invaded by a force of alien Overlords. This is not a destructive colonial invasion, which is why there’s no Hollywood blockbuster in the tale, but a seemingly benevolent intervention which ushers in a golden age for humanity. Although humankind initially does not get to meet the Overlords in person (for reasons I won’t give away here), the aliens unite the world’s governments, eradicate crime, conflict and the nation

Last summer, we banned personal electronics from our family vacation—no laptops, iPods, video games or other devices. Instead we played cards, read books and watched the Olympics. The first book on my list was Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged , which I’d read for college years ago. I wanted to reread the 1957 novel because it was being discussed as the presidential race heated up in August 2012.
Here’s a story from my neck of the woods (Greater Boston) that may have broader implications for the future of the labor market and the labor movement. In essence, it’s about what happened after baristas at a small independent chain of coffeehouses opted to unionize and then attempted to pressure the owners towards signing a first collective bargaining agreement.
Pay and benefits are no longer the only critical factors in deciding where to work, with a majority citing their employers’ values (80 percent) and commitment to the environment (76 percent) and social equality (75 percent) as key criteria, claims a survey commissioned by advocate and author Paul Polman. The Net Positive Barometer, a survey of 2,000 British employees, claims that 41 percent are concerned about paying their bills, while 69 percent are anxious about the future of the planet and so
This post, micromanaging goodbye emails, overhead lighting wars, and more , was written by Alison Green and published on Ask a Manager. It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go… 1. Perhaps you’re one of the lucky few who have known your career path since you were barely out of diapers. What was once pretend play (i.e. teacher, doctor or firefighter) is now your profession. How to support your partner through a career change As the partner of someone pursuing a new career path , here are a few tips for how to support your partner during this often-stre

If you grew up being told not to make waves, you might want to reconsider your stance on the matter and become a changemaker. Why should you make waves in your team or organization? Easy: to bring about change that builds momentum, that introduces improvements and opportunities otherwise missed by conforming to the status quo. Change makes our world better.
“You have to make an exit to make an entrance.” That’s the advice Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels once gave entrepreneur and reality television star Bethenny Frankel. It seemed those words rang especially true as Frankel returned to the Bravo show that launched her into household-name status, The Real Housewives of New York (RHONY). After leaving the show in 2010 and focusing on her Bravo spin-off, Bethenny Ever After, which followed her through a wedding, giving birth and the rapid r
When you start talking about mentorship programs, you’ll usually get one of the following reactions: a collective groan about the additional work that such a program might entail, intimidation about where to begin or excitement from people who have experienced successful mentor relationships and the growth that comes from them. Nearly every company can benefit from one, however.
